There is a lot of buzz these days about living your dream, fulfilling your calling, walking out your purpose, and on and on…..in fact that it can be easy for us to get discouraged when we feel like we are not there yet.
Can I just share that I had a moment today when the Holy Spirit dropped something in my spirit about this issue? It came as I was sitting with a group of gals at a Bible Study table that I lead on Tuesdays. We were discussing spiritual gifts and how we each have been given gifts and talents, yet sometimes it can feel like a mystery as to what those gifts are and how we can begin to use them. Have you ever felt like there is an area that would be fun to serve in, or a profession that you thought would totally fit with your life passions and desires? Then you gave it a go only to find out that you DIDN’T like it at all?
If we give something a try and we realize that it is not a fit for us, we have NOT failed or missed our calling.
Before I became a mom, I worked in management in the automotive industry, specifically as a Service manager. The job of our department was to fix cars that were broken (in addition to regular maintenance). Sometimes the problems that vehicles would come in with easily identified, other times concerns might be intermittent or hard to diagnose. I would frequently come into work in the morning and face technicians that were frustrated and ready to throw in the towel over a vehicle that they hadn’t been able to fix yet. Sometimes after trying several different repair paths, the vehicle would still have the same concern. I would also encourage them with these words “now you know what IS NOT the problem. This just means you are several steps closer to to finding where the problem lies.”
Can I submit to you that the same is true in life? When we give something a try and it doesn’t work, be encouraged. You know what your gifting ISN’T. This is a great thing because you are one step closer to what God has called you to do. Romans 8:28 tells that God will cause ALL things to work together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. Even when we working in a job we don’t like, or serving in an area that we don’t feel is bringing life to us, God WILL use those things for our good. He will redeem each of those things and use them.
Something I gleaned from the Beth Moore Bible study we are currently in; when you are fulfilling your calling, it will energize you and not suck the life out of you. I recently had the opportunity to serve on a ministry team with my church for a conference, and then two days later I had an opportunity to minister with a really good friend at a women’s event at her church. I felt more “alive” after having the opportunity to pray with women and speak encouragement into their lives. In fact it was a little hard to so to sleep both of those nights; not because I wasn’t tired, but because I felt so pumped! I was energized. I feel the same way after prayer meetings. I know what my giftings are..and I know I feel energized when they are in operation.,
One more thing I want to add into the mix, IF you are married and/or have kids, your primary calling is that of a wife and/or mother. God equips us for where He has placed us. I can testify to the fact that when I speak encouraging words to my husband, I feel energized. When I teach my kids about Jesus or His word, I experience a sense that I am fulfilling my purpose here on this earth. Now, when I’m going through the day-to-day of preparing meals, doing laundry and cleaning toilets, I don’t always have a “glowing feeling” while performing these tasks, BUT I do exude a certain sense of fulfillment in knowing that I am serving my family. I am fulfilling my call and purpose each day that I am playing with my kids, or making my husband a cup of coffee in the morning. The rest of the places where I get to serve, is a wonderful bonus.
Our church does something each month called “Growth Track”. In the last session they have a spiritual gifting analysis that is a bit like a personality test, but it helps to you understand where your gifting/callings lie. If you are not sure about what would help you feel fulfilled, this would be a great place to start.
Be encouraged, God has a plan that is tailor made and fit for you. He created you with your personality and fit you together to fulfill the call He has on your life. You do not have a flawed personality, but you are wonderfully made just the way you need to be to walk out His plans and purposes for your life. Hang in there, He LOVES you and needs to you in these days and times we find ourselves living in.
Blessings and much Grace.
